Town's medevac stance indefensible

December 16 , 2005

To Mayor Patricia Flannery: As one of the more active volunteer firefighters who serves our community, I am shocked and amazed that your administration has joined the lawsuit that opposes Medevac. It appears to me that you're pandering to a small minority in Bridgewater, and I'm extremely disappointed for a number of reasons:

Medevac provides a vital service to our community and we're lucky to have them close by;
As a firefighter, it is reassuring to know that should a fire or accident scene require medevac, at least my fellow firefighters, myself, and victims will have the opportunity to be transported to a hospital as quickly as possible. On many occasions when we have responded to calls that needed medevac assistance, I am convinced that it has helped those victims who needed immediate life-saving attention;
Just as Bedminster has lost every round in their lawsuit, I can only predict that the same results will continue given that the state and federal agencies responsible for medevac will make sure they prevail in keeping Medevac at Somerset Airport;
It must also be noted that the majority of helicopter traffic in our area is not from medevac. Rather, it is from private and corporate helicopters, and stopping medevac will have an extremely marginal effect at reducing helicopter traffic that passes over Bridgewater.

Given all of the above, I am sure that an overwhelming majority of Bridgewater residents will feel that you are wasting our tax dollars on a losing cause.
